{"id":1353,"date":"2025-02-25T16:57:07","date_gmt":"2025-02-25T16:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liberiasp.gov.lr\/?p=1353"},"modified":"2025-02-25T16:57:07","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T16:57:07","slug":"safety-nets-and-cash-transfers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.liberiasp.gov.lr\/?p=1353","title":{"rendered":"Safety Nets and Cash Transfers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Bank currently supports over 350 million individuals with social safety net programs worldwide<strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>COVID-19 saw the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/documents1.worldbank.org\/curated\/en\/099800007112236655\/pdf\/P17658505ca3820930a254018e229a30bf8.pdf\">largest scale up of social safety net transfers in history<\/a>.&nbsp; And just last year, in response to the global food crisis, social protection responses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.worldbank.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/54eb895b-3cb3-4322-b342-af377b52e3bd\/content\">more than doubled<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An estimated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/topic\/socialprotectionandjobs\/publication\/the-state-of-social-safety-nets-2018\">36 percent<\/a>&nbsp;of the poorest people escaped extreme poverty because of social safety nets, providing clear evidence that social safety net programs have a substantial impact in the global fight against poverty.&nbsp;The evidence base continues to mount on the value of layered social safety nets &nbsp;in diverse settings such as&nbsp;<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10584-018-02364-8\">India<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w25981\">Afghanistan<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ej\/article\/132\/647\/2438\/6556006?login=true\">Nicaragua<\/a>,&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-022-04647-8\">Sahel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.worldbank.org\/handle\/10986\/29115\">Data<\/a>&nbsp;shows that these programs lower inequality, and reduce the poverty gap by about 45 percent. These positive effects of safety net transfers hold true for low and middle-income countries alike.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet in low-income countries around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.worldbank.org\/handle\/10986\/29115\">one in five of the world\u2019s poorest people still lack safety net coverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet we know that safety nets cash transfers not only help nations invest in human capital, but also serve as a source of income for poor people, improving their standard of living. &nbsp;Today, some 2.5 billion people are&nbsp;covered by safety net programs and some 650 million people or 56 percent of the poorest quintile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last Updated:\u00a0Mar 28, 2024 by the World Bank<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Bank currently supports over 350 million individuals with social safety net programs worldwide.&nbsp;&nbsp;COVID-19 saw the&nbsp;largest scale up of social safety net transfers in history.&nbsp; And just last year, in response to the global food crisis, social protection responses&nbsp;more than doubled.
