Gender Minister Opens New Peace Hut and Cassava Processing Plant in Todee District

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Gbeme Horace-Kollie, has opened a new Peace Hut and Cassava Processing Plant in Nyehn, Todee District, Montserrado County.

This development is part of the “Girls and Young Women Take Action for Peace” (GYWTAP) Project. It is run by Plan International Liberia and funded by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.

The Peace Hut and plant aim to help women take part in peacebuilding and earn a living, especially in rural areas. These spaces will support community discussions, healing, and unity.

So far, 1,140 Peace Hut members have been organized. Out of those, 945 are active. Also, 1,080 young women aged 18–35 are part of the project, with 1,037 actively involved. The project also includes 400 boys and young men, with 365 currently active.

At the opening event, Minister Horace-Kollie said the project is a major step for the Todee community and Liberia’s peace efforts. She said Peace Huts are more than buildings—they are symbols of hope, healing, and women’s leadership.

“These huts give women a space to talk, solve problems, and support each other,” she said.

She also praised the new facility as a place for young people to learn, for women to lead, and for the community to grow stronger together.

“To the women of Todee and all of Liberia: this is your day. You have led the way in keeping peace. This is a celebration of your strength and leadership,” she said.

The Minister thanked Plan International Liberia, the UN Peacebuilding Fund, the One UN Family, and local leaders for their support.

She encouraged the people of Todee to take care of the Peace Hut and use it well. “This is your space to solve problems, grow your businesses, and unite as a community.”

She also called on the women to speak up, lead, and make their voices heard. She urged the community to set up a team to monitor and maintain the facility, ensuring it stays useful and meets its goals.

Finally, the Ministry praised all partners for working together and promised to continue supporting peace, inclusion, and empowerment for women and youth in Liberia.
